As OceanWell continues progressing through its ocean testing and optimization program, an exciting milestone is underway: OceanWell’s first operations in French waters. This deployment represents an important step in understanding site specific conditions for its water farm technology.

Behind the scenes, our engineering team has been closely studying the real environmental and bathymetric properties at approximately 450m deep off the Nice coast before proceeding to the next phase of technical studies and environmental impact assessment.

Key details:

  • This testing program fully permitted by the French authorities
  • Real operations took place between 23 - 25 June
  • Multiple sites analyzed in the study zone
  • Deep sea real operating zones tested (approximately 450m)
  • This test will inform the next phase of project development

Environmental stewardship was a central component of the testing program.

In addition to validating our  system performance, OceanWell is recording and evaluating environmental conditions throughout the trials to ensure the technology operates in harmony with the marine environment. These efforts reflect OceanWell’s commitment to advancing new water supplies while prioritizing the protection and long-term health of the ocean ecosystem.

In France, as in California, OceanWell is taking a step by step approach to ensure any impact is understood and mitigated before proceeding with fresh water production.

OceanWell's mission is to supply freshwater water intended for producing drinking water, to strengthen freshwater quality and availability and provide a steady and sustainable supply of water as per the European Commission’s Water Resilience Strategy.

Every design improvement, every data point collected, and every successful deployment contributes to a larger vision: helping create a future where access to safe, sustainable drinking water becomes more reliable for communities around the world, crucially without hurting its source: the sea.

The testing program in Nice represents more than a technical milestone, it reflects the continued hard work and determination of the OceanWell team to optimize it’s system for commercial deployment, and a continued expansion of OceanWell European operations.

A special thanks to our partners at Eau d’Azur, Metropol Nice Cote d’Azur, and Nice and Team Nice Cote d’Azur for their continued support, and to our French shipping partners Matthez Freight and Foselev Marine.
